Affirmative Action Requirements

Affirmative Action Requirements

by Angela Adams, Director, EEO & Compliance Solutions, HR Source

Did you know that credit unions covered by the National Credit Union Association (NCUA) with deposit insurance are required to comply with affirmative action requirements under Executive Order 11246, the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act, and the Rehabilitation Act? These three equal opportunity programs obligate a covered credit union to make efforts to employ and advance women, minorities, protected veterans, and individuals with disabilities, not only in their current workforce, but in recruiting efforts.

Covered credit unions with 50 or more employees are also required to have a written affirmative action program. A part of the U.S. Department of Labor called the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) monitors employers for compliance with their responsibilities. OFCCP does examine credit unions – in fact, a credit union is on the OFCCP’s latest list of organizations (released in November 2024) it plans to audit in the coming months. Even if you are not large enough to need a written affirmative action program, you still have responsibilities under these requirements.
